In my line of work, I frequently see and hear comments regarding regulatory agencies "going too far", and "how did our kids ever survive without all these safety regulations"?  The sad truth is, some didn't survive.  Having spent 10 years as a medic, I saw first-hand the tragedy that can happen when unsafe situations occur.  If you were to ask any of those families who experienced the loss of a child due to a preventable injury, every one of those families will tell you that they wish they had known, or taken the necessary steps to keep their child safe.

When I see my granddaughter (pic above), I'm reminded of just how fragile children can be at such a young age.  We want kids to be active, and we know that there will be skinned knees and elbows, stubbed toes, and the occasional fat lip.  But let's all work to eliminate those devastating tragedies of permanent injury and death that are totally preventable.

Every year around the world, a million families lose a child to a preventable injury. In fact, preventable injuries are the number one killer of kids in the United States today.

We can change this.

I’ve joined the Safe Kids Day campaign to raise awareness and resources to support Safe Kids Worldwide, a global nonprofit dedicated to preventing childhood injuries and deaths due to car crashes, drowning, fires, falls and more.

The Organization:

Safe Kids Worldwide

Safe Kids Worldwide is a global organization dedicated to preventing childhood injuries, the number one cause of death to children in the United States. Throughout the world, more than one million children die of an injury each year, and every one of these tragedies is preventable. Safe Kids works with an extensive network of more than 500 coalitions in the United States and with partners in 25 countries to reduce traffic injuries, drownings, falls, burns, poisonings and more. Since 1988, Safe Kids has helped reduce the U.S. childhood death rate from unintentional injury by 55 percent. Working together, we can do much more for kids everywhere.
